No Child Left Inside!

Now that Spring is coming, let’s turn our attention outdoors...

Did you know that America’s kids spend only four to seven minutes outside per day? In fact, by the time most children go to kindergarten, they have spent more than 5,000 hours in front of a television - enough time to earn a college degree!

This month, you can help reverse these worrisome trends simply by using the extra hour of sunlight to go outside! At the end of the month share your favorite outside memory together...

Here are some outside things to do together:

  1. *Make a “nature” map that shows the trees that line your street, the plants in your garden-all the natural landmarks nearby!

  2. *Note the types of birds, mammals, and insects you see as you wander through your local “habitat.” Keep a record or notebook by drawing pictures and describing them.

  3. *Create a nature table in your home with those little treasures your children find while going on a neighborhood scavenger hunt for rocks, twigs, flowers, and leaves. Use folded index cards to label items.

  4. *Build a fort. Find long sturdy sticks and twine them together in tee
pee formation. Drape blankets on tree limbs. Use the inside of a bush for a hideaway. Recycle a large box, cut windows and call it home.
  5. *Take a five senses hike. Head outside, being mindful of not only what you see, but what you can hear, smell, feel- even (with caution) taste!

  6. * Make Ants on a Log by spreading peanut butter, cream cheese or  spread on a a piece of celery and top
    ping it with raisins.
  7. *Make Dirt Dessert by placing several spoons of  pudding in a plastic cup. Add several gummy worms and then crushed chocolate graham crackers or Oreos.

These are the top ten reasons kids need fresh air:

  1. 1.Stronger bones and lower cancer risks.

  2. 2.Trimmer and more healthy kids.

  3. 3.Improved eyesight. Recent studies indicate that kids that get outdoors have less nearsightedness.

  4. 4.Less depression and hyperactivity.

  5. 5.Longer attention spans. Kids who stare at TV and video games have less patience and shorter attention spans.

  6. 6.Better at making friends. Games outside improve people skills.

  7. 7.More creative.

  8. 8.Less “acting out” at home and school.

  9. 9.Measurably better grades in school

  10. 10.A longer lifespan and healthier adult life.
